FAYRE LAYDES GROUP TO PERFORM AUG. 4

Fayre Laydes Musicke, an unusual group of women who specialize in music of the Baroque and Renaissance eras, will make a rare local appearance from 7 to 9 p.m. Aug. 4 at the Potrafka Gallery, 600 Washington St.

Fran Olsen, a member of the original group formed in 1987, said the Fayre Laydes have been playing fewer programs over the past several years because of conflicting schedules within the group.

``But we have made a concerted effort to regroup since last summer,'' she said.

The group has played two benefit concerts for the preservation of the country's oldest pipe organ at the country's oldest English church, Historic St. Luke's near Smithfield. Both the organ and church were built around 1632.

The recent benefit at St. Luke's raised $1,270 for the project and attracted 250 people.

The Fayre Laydes Musicke was very popular in the area from 1987 until 1991, playing at Music for an Olde Towne Afternoon and at other events in historic homes around Hampton Roads.

The group's five members perform on all sizes of recorders, treble, tenor and bass violas da gamba, harpsichord and organ. The variety of instruments provides a varied program of solos and ensembles.

The two-hour program Sunday will include Medieval, Renaissance and Early Baroque selections.

The musicians who will perform in Portsmouth next Sunday include Dianne Jele of Portsmouth, organist at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church; Deborah Ogan of Virginia Beach, a technical writer for Sentara; Viola S. Berger, a teacher at Tidewater Community College; Mary Norris, a financial counselor; and Olsen, who works at Maryview Hospital's behavioral medical science department.

Admission to the gallery concert is $5 at the door. For more information, call 399-4774. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
