JERRY KIMBLE

Jerry Kimble, of the 2100 block of Margaret Dr., formerly a resident of Peekskill, N.Y., went home to be with the Lord on July 25, 1996.

Mr. Kimble was born Feb. 5, 1934, in Dixon, Miss., to Lessie and Sam Kimble, who laid a strong moral foundation of love of Jesus and family that transcended throughout his lifetime. He was educated in Jackson Public Schools and Tougaloo College. He received his Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Mercy College in New York. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, for which he was honorably discharged.

Jerry's compassion and commitment to people fostered a long, dedicated and very distinguished career from which he retired as Deputy Superintendent of Security after 28 years of service in the New York State Department of Corrections. Also he was a deputy sheriff for Virginia Beach.

Just months after ``retirement'', Jerry responded to a call from the Virginia Beach Sheriff's Department to implement an electronic home monitoring and pre-trial release program for the Virginia Beach Sheriff's Department. For a brief time, he also worked in Norfolk Public School. He took particular delight in the DOCENT program, wherein he led high school students on tours through the jails and gave lectures to serve as a deterrent to criminal behaviors.

He leaves to cherish his wife Mary; two sons, Jeffry and Kenneth; a daughter-in-law, Lois; two granddaughters, Krista and Kylie; three sisters, Pauline Sherman, Ethel Christian, Minnie Elivie Culberson; a brother, John Brandon; three brothers-in-law; four sisters-in-law; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, friends, and friends of more than 35 years, Alonzo Peterson, Henry Garvin and Ernie Edwards.

He was a member of First Baptist Church, Bute Street, Ruth Lodge No. 92 (Masonic) and the Fraternal Order of Police. He recieved numerous letters of commendation, awards, a special mention from the New York State governor, commissioners and others.

Arrangements are being made at P.G. Thomasson Funeral Services Inc. Service will be conducted at noon Tuesday, July 30, 1996, in First Baptist Church, Bute Street, Norfolk, by the Rev. Robert G. Murray. Burial will be in Colonial Grove Memorial Cemetery. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
