YOUTH SHOT, WOUNDED AS GUN SALE BETWEEN 2 TEENS GOES AWRY

A boy was shot in the buttocks Friday after a planned gun sale between two 14-year-olds went sour, police said.

The shooting happened in a car near the intersection of Edwin Drive and South Independence Boulevard. Police spokesman Lou Thurston said two boys, 14 and 17, were riding in back seat while two other boys, also 14 and 17, were in the front seats.

As a 17-year-old drove, the two 14-year-olds negotiated. Something went wrong and the deal fell through, Thurston said.

The 17-year-old driver tried to dash from the car stopped at a traffic light, and he was shot. He ran to a nearby gas station. The boys in the back tried to force the 14-year-old in the front to drive, but he also ran away, Thurston said.

Then the two in the back ran from the car.

Police quickly rounded up all four teens.

The 17-year-old rear-seat passenger was charged with abduction and using a gun in a crime. The 14-year-old rear-seat passenger faces the same charges, plus a charge of shooting the driver, Thurston said. Both are being held in a detention facility, he said.

The teens in the front seat weren't charged. The wounded boy was treated at a hospital and released.

Because of the boys' ages, police did not release their names.
