JOSEPHINE M. SMITH

Josephine McAlexander Smith, wife of Russell Hughes Smith, died July 27, 1996, at a hospital in Richmond.

Mrs. Smith was born on Nov. 29, 1903, in Indianapolis, Ind., the daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. Robert O. McAlexander. After graduating from Tudor Hall in Indianapolis and Wellesley College, she worked as a social worker for the city of Indianapolis and as a buyer for L.S. Ayres Co., also in Indianapolis. After her marriage in 1932, she moved to Virginia where she lived in Norfolk for seven years and in Richmond for 49 years.

A devoted wife, mother and an excellent homemaker, Mrs. Smith was also for many years an active member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, the Tuckahoe Women's Club, and the Country Club of Virginia. She served on the board of the Richmond Chapter of the Virginia League for Planned Parenthood. She enjoyed painting and writing, and received a number of awards for her work in amateur competitions.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Russell Hughes Smith; a son, Dr. Robert Lawrence Smith of Virginia Beach; a daughter, Linda Tyler Smith Ferneyhough of Lynchburg; four grandsons, Stephens Alexander Smith, Russell Lawrence Smith, and Geoffrey Hughes Smith, all of Virginia Beach, and James Goss Ferneyhough III of Georgetown, Del.

A private graveside service is planned. Internment will be at Eastern Shore Chapel Cemetery in Virginia Beach. It is suggested that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Planned Parenthood or a charity of the donor's choice. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road, is handling arrangements.
