Thanks to editorial writer Patrick Lackey for reminding readers that being cruel to animals does not somehow make one ``pro-human'' (Perspectives, July 25). As Mr. Lackey points out, ``Cruelty is cruelty, no matter the victim.''
But I was disappointed to read that Mr. Lackey eats chickens and fish because he believes they ``aren't that bright,'' although he does admit that these animals can feel pain.
Mr. Lackey says he would eat animals killed by others, but he ``wouldn't torture them.'' Unfortunately, the billions of chickens and fish that are killed for America's dinner tables every year are tortured.
Cruelty is cruelty: It matters little if we cause the cruelty directly or if we pay others - factory farmers and fishers - to do it for us.
