Roy J. Wood, 58, of the 200 block of Cedar Road, died Sunday, July 28, 1996, at his residence, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Mr. Wood was born in Butler, Pa., and was the son of the late Edwin Aaron and Hazel J. Nicklin Wood. He was also predeceased by his sister, Patricia Wood. He was a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church. Mr. Wood was an industrial specialist with the Defense Logistics Agency since 1985.
Mr. Wood has given many hours and a lot of heart as captain of the Chesapeake Volunteer Fire Department and more recently as president. Mr. Wood was an E.M.T. with Chesapeake E.M.S. Auxiliary and served on the board of the Chesapeake E.M.S. Auxiliary, where he was made a life member. He was instrumental in fulfilling the dream of obtaining a Chesapeake Fire Boat for the protection of the city and surrounding areas. He was also a member of the Tidewater Fire Photographers Association, International Game Fish Association, and the North Carolina Beach Buggy Association. He was an Eagle Scout and a member of Demolay. Mr. Wood attended Arizona State University and graduated from the University of Maryland. He also served as an aviation structural mechanic in the U.S. Navy for four years.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Marie Wood; a son, Randall J. Wood of California, Md.; two stepdaughters, Karen A. Roach of Newport News and Krista O. Merletti of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; a stepson, Eric J. Olsen of Chesapeake; two brothers, George E. Wood of Blackwood, N.J., and Russell L. Wood of Butler; and six grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 31, 1996, in the chapel of Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge, by the Rev. W. Roberts McIvor and the Rev. Jack Scott. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. today. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Chesapeake Volunteer Fireman's Association or the Chesapeake E.M.S. Auxiliary. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
