Six people, including a police officer, were injured Sunday when the officer swerved to miss a car and then the police cruiser struck a third vehicle.
The accident happened about 11:50 a.m. on U.S. Route 58, or Holland Road, at the intersection of Manning Bridge Road.
Officer John W. King, 24, was eastbound on Route 58 when a maroon Buick pulled out from Manning Bridge Road, said police spokesman Mike Simpkins. King swerved into the westbound lanes of the divided highway and hit a car driven by Louis E. Brinkley Jr., 41, of Glen Allen, Simpkins said.
Brinkley's 6-year-old granddaughter, Amanda Tsiokus, was taken by Sentara Nightingale helicopter ambulance to Norfolk, where she was in stable condition at Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, a hospital spokeswoman said Monday afternoon.
Donna Justice, 46, a passenger in Brinkley's car, was in stable condition in Obici Hospital Monday afternoon, a hospital spokeswoman said.
King, Louis Brinkley and Brinkley's children - Joseph Brinkley, 14, and Diane Brinkley, 15 - were treated in the emergency room at Obici and later released, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Police are still looking for the first car, the Buick, which is registered to James T. Reid of Washington, D.C.
