WAKE UP, PETA

I believe that People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is a very good, well-intentioned organization. I believe members' hearts are in the right place. I believe we need such an organization.

PETA should be educating people on how to care for their pets by properly seeing to their needs. PETA's money would be well-spent on programs to spay and neuter cats and dogs so city animal-control offices wouldn't have to euthanize so many unwanted pets.

Instead, I see PETA members on TV ``rescuing'' lobsters, attacking fishermen and picketing McDonald's restaurants. I have to wonder about a group of people who spend money buying lobsters from a Southern store, shipping them back ``home'' to Maine and then stand on the shore waving ``bye-bye'' and blowing kisses to a liberated crustacean.

I hate to see a well-meaning organization lose its credibility this way when there are so many worthwhile causes for PETA to put forth its efforts on.

PETA should wake up. It needs to revamp its agenda, steer in the right direction and get its priorities straight.
