FRED R. HICKS JR.

Mr. Fred Rudolph Hicks Jr. died in his home on July 29, 1996. He was 69 and a native of Wilmington, N.C.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred R. Hicks Sr. and Emily Cottle Hicks and his sister, Betty Clemmons. Mr. Hicks was a retired merchant seaman and a member of the Seafarers International Union. He has been decorated by several international governments for his participation during World War II while serving on merchant vessels. He was instrumental in the fight to try and bring legislation recognizing the Merchant Marines as veterans of World War II. He also was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Mr. Hicks is survived by his loving wife, Mozelle Hicks; two sons, Ben F. Hicks of Kingsland, Ga. and Michael D. Hicks of Virginia Beach; three daughters, Pamela Ballance of Chesapeake and her husband, Larry S. Ballance Sr., Jacqueline Larkin of Virginia Beach and her husband, Andrew Larkin, Cheryl Weeks of Virginia Beach and her husband, Gary Weeks. Fred had four loving and devoted grandchildren: Lori and Larry Ballance Jr., Aaron and Jacob Weeks. He will be greatly missed by his family, may he find God's blessing and an eternal life of peace. We love you.
