Police identified the girl shot Monday by a friend as 16-year-old Kathy Wilkerson of the 1000 block of Sea Holly Court, near General Booth Boulevard.
A bullet apparently was fired from a .25-caliber semiautomatic pistol and passed through Wilkerson's upper body while she was visiting a friend in the 3300 block of Clubhouse Road in Princess Anne Plaza.
Police have charged the friend, a 16-year-old boy whose name was not released, with unlawful wounding.
Police said Wilkerson is in fair condition in Virginia Beach General Hospital. They boy is being held at the Tidewater Detention Home. Police have said the shooting was accidental.
The case is still under investigation.
