WEEKLY BRIEFING

WORLD WAR II AIRCRAFT DISPLAY: The Confederate Air Force is sponsoring a World War II aircraft fly-in August 5 through 11 at the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport. Highlights include the world's last flying Boeing B-29 Superfortress, ``Fifi'', and a Consolidated B-24 Liberator, ``Diamond Lil.'' Other aircraft scheduled to appear include a Curtiss C-46 Commando; a Lockheed C-60 Lodestar transport; and a Grumman Wildcat carrier-based fighter.

The display is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and free for children under 12 and service members in military uniform. The Confederate Air Force's Old Dominion Squadron is based at Chesapeake's Hampton Roads Airport. For more information on the aircraft display, call (757) 838-3217 or (757) 497-7672.

NAVY EXCHANGE RELOCATES: The Navy Exchange located at Commander in Chief, Atlantic Fleet compound is moving to what was, until recently, the enlisted dining facility; the old exchange location will be turned into a fitness center. Several new services will be offered and a number of others consolidated in the new location. In addition to the exchange store, the facility will boast a sandwich shop, federal credit union, barber shop and travel agency. The exchange is scheduled to open Thursday.

NAUTICUS LECTURE SERIES: German U-boat patrols off the Virginia coast during World War II are the focus of a slide show and lecture by author Al Chewning at 7:30 p.m. today at the maritime center on the Elizabeth River waterfront. The free lecture in the facility's big-screen Nauticus Theater is part of the ``Deep Sea Treasures'' exhibit running through Aug. 25. For more information call 664-1000.

FRIGATE TESTS COMBAT SYSTEM: The guided missile frigate Kauffman recently completed an extensive test of its new combat system in Puerto Rico. After several months of shipyard work to replace and upgrade the missile fire control system, the ship conducted tests that included live firing of the Phalanx Close-in Weapons System against a simulated missile threat.

SMART SHIP PROGRAM: As part of the Navy's Smart Ship Program, the cruiser Yorktown recently tested a new navigation support system that enabled its crew to navigate from open ocean to an inland anchorage using nothing but the Voyage Management System. The Yorktown was automatically piloted to within 50 yards of one of the Navy's precision anchorages within sight of the Norfolk Naval Base.
