Mike Cuddyer, a senior at Great Bridge High School, has been named to the USA Junior Baseball Team that will play in the Junior World Championships next month in Cuba.
Cuddyer, a two-time All-Tidewater pick, is one of four infielders listed on the 18-player roster. He batted .541 with 13 home runs and 50 RBIs at Great Bridge last spring.
The tryouts in Joplin, Mo. were by invitation only and open to players 16 to 18. Thirteen high school seniors and five college freshmen made the team, including USA TODAY and Baseball Coaches of America high school player of the year Matt White from Waynesboro, Pa.
The team plays Canada on Wednesday in Joplin and then flies to Jacksonville, Fla. for eight days before leaving for Sancti Spiritus, Cuba.
The USA is the defending champion and beat Chinese Taipei 10-0 in the gold medal game at Fenway Park last year. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
