The plan was simple for Norfolk Post 204 Tuesday night: Have Ted Tignor shut down Luis Dreyfus Electric, get him some runs, and pull him in the middle innings to keep him fresh for the rest of the Second District American Legion playoffs.
Problem was, Tignor executed the plan too well. Perfectly, in fact.
Tignor, a June graduate of Cox High School, pitched the first perfect game in local American Legion play this season, striking out nine in a 10-0 seven-inning win over Luis Dreyfus Electric in a first-round game at Nansemond River.
``I just felt really good all night,'' said Tignor, who threw only 81 pitches. ``I got my second wind really late in the game.''
``He was hitting his spots,'' said catcher Brandon Ramsey. ``He had his three pitches working all night.''
Tignor had an awareness throughout the game that he was working on something special.
``The whole time, I knew I was throwing a perfect game,'' said Tignor, a 5-9, 158-pound righthander, ``but it didn't really hit me until late.''
Tignor, who will try to walk on to the Old Dominion baseball team as a middle infielder this fall, had a better night at bat than his opponents, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
