Gertrude Stagg Underwood, 80, of 16090 Tings Road, died Tuesday, July 30, 1996, in Chesapeake General Hospital.
She was a native of Isle of Wight County and a homemaker. Mrs. Underwood was a member of Central Hill Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school for 58 years.
Survivors include a daughter, Judith U. Uzzell of Suffolk and her husband, James E. Uzzell Sr.; two sisters, Fannie S. Jones and Margaret P. Holland, both of Smithfield; a brother, Windfield Stagg of Smithfield; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Central Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. John McQuarry and Rev. James Crocker officiating. Burial will follow in Central Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 8 p.m. in Colonial Funeral Home, Smithfield, and suggests memorial contributions may be made to Central Hill Baptist Church, c/o Ollie Logan, 14200 Raynor Road, Ivor, Va. 23866.
