On July 30, 1996, at 3 a.m., the Lord called home his servant, James Carlton Ward.
He was born in Bertie County, N.C., to the late Stuart and Molly Ward. He was baptized at Piney Wood Chapel, where he accepted the Lord as his personal savior. He was an Army veteran of World War II, and received an honorable discharge. He worked at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard as an electrician, and retired with 32 years service.
He leaves to mourn his ex-wife and devoted friend to the end, Carrie H. Ward of Portsmouth; three daughters, Viola Mitchell of Vaux Hall, N.J., Beatrice Ward of Newark, N.J., and Connie Ward Stevens of Chesapeake; a son, Mark Anthony Ward of Portsmouth; five sisters, Otelia Freeman of Cleveland, Ohio, Blanche Riddick of Portsmouth, Connie Cofield and Geneva Askew of Dorchester, Mass., Ruth Mallory of Suffolk; a brother, Rudolph Ward of Petersburg; two sons-in-law, James Stevens and Starkey Mitchell; four brothers-in-law, Adolph Cofield, Herbert Askew, William Mallory, and Ernest White; three granddaughters, Dawn Gaskins, Keely Mitchell, and Nikki Mitchell; a grandson-in-law, Rev. Floyd Gaskins; two great-grandchildren, Tashana Mitchell and Romarr Mitchell; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.
The funeral will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. in Noble Street Baptist Church, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Ronnie Northam Sr. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Cemetery, Chesapeake. Corprew Funeral Home is presiding. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, and at his residence at other times. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
