Clara Vann Whitehurst Spain, 80, died on Tuesday, July 30, 1996, in her home.
Mrs. Spain was born in Norfolk to the late Wiley Guy and Mary Virginia Hodges Whitehurst. She was a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church in Waverly. She was employed as a cashier at both Pope's Supermarket in Waverly and Waverly Drugs. She was preceded in death by her son, Howard Calvin Spain.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Howard E. Spain; a son, Milton F. Spain of Davis, Calif.; a daughter, Virginia Spain Bradley of Waverly; a brother, Kenneth Whitehurst of South Mill, N.C.; seven grandchildren; and two nephews.
A funeral will be conducted at 4 p.m. today in Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, by the Rev. Pat Tony. Burial will be in Waverly Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home, 12486 Jerusalem Plank Road, Waverly. Memorial donations may be made to the Waverly Volunteer Rescue Squad.
