DONELL H. EDGERTON

Donell Hugh Edgerton, 64, formerly of Norfolk, known to his friends as ``Flat Top,'' passed away, July 15, 1996.

Col. Edgerton, was a retired attorney-at-law, university professor and colonel, U.S. Army (ret). He was the son the late William H. and Victoria W. Edgerton.

He graduated in June 1949, from Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk, where he was a four-year honored member of the band and choir.

In May 1953, he graduated from Virginia State College (now University) with a bachelor's degree in music, after serving as first chair-clarinet in the university band/orchestra. In addition, he was commissioned an Army second lieutenant in the Quartermaster Corps.

He was initiated into the Alpha Phi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. at Virginia State and maintained a keen and active interest in his fraternity, of which he was a life member. Mr. Edgerton serviced his fraternity on the National Grand Chapter level as well as with the Brooklyn, New York and Long Island Chapters.

Mr. Edgerton entered Brooklyn Law School in New York where he earned the Juris Doctor degree and later a Master of Law (Jurisprudence) degree from New York University Law School.

As a member of the New York State Bar Association, he practiced law on all levels as well as in private practice.

He taught law and criminal justice courses at Suffolk County Community College for over two decades.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Few Edgerton and his devoted daughter, Dawnette Lynn Edgerton; a sister, Mrs. Josephine Edgerton Brown; a brother, Dr. Wilbert D. Edgerton; a very special cousin, Mrs. Inez W. Monroe; an uncle, Mr. Joe Otis Edgerton of Richmond; a brother-in-law, Daniel A. Harrison of Norfolk; four nephews; five nieces; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Wilma Dozier of Detroit, Mich.; and a special in-law, Mrs. Fannie Few of Eatonton, Ga.

A chapel service attended by relatives and friends from several states, followed by a graveside ceremony, with full military honors, was held for Colonel Edgerton on Thursday, July 25, 1996, in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.

A memorial service will also be held in New York in late August 1996, details to be announced at a later date.
