ART SHOW OPENS SUNDAY PRINTS BY 2 VIRGINIA BEACH ARTISTS FEATURED AT MUSEUM

``Beyond the Surface,'' a show opening Sunday at the Portsmouth Museums Art Center, will feature prints by Cyndi Herrmann and Clay McGlamory of Virginia Beach.

The exhibition will include collographs and serigraphs as well as mixed media prints with a great variety of color and texture. Both artists focus on the print-making process, using myriad textures and colors to entice viewers to explore realms beyond the surface to the paper.

Herrmann is described as a print-maker whose serigraph (silk-screen) prints focus on non-objective ``residual'' images. She has said that her inspiration is found in nature and the creative/destructive forces of life cycles.

McGlamory uses an obscure process, the collograph, to create heavily embossed prints. His plates often have between eight and 12 layers, which create a relief surface to give his collographs a sculptural quality.

The artists will attend the opening reception from 2 to 4 p.m. The reception is free to museum members. Non-members are asked to make a donation of $3 at the door of the center located in the 1846 Courthouse at the corner of High and Court streets.

The exhibit is sponsored by the Business Consortium for Art Support. ILLUSTRATION: This print by Clay McGlamory will be in the new
