``The threat of terrorism is almost nonexistent,'' or so the employees and military personnel were told several months ago when the guards were removed from the entrances of all of our local bases.
Traffic now enters and leaves the bases freely. There is nothing to prevent a truck full of explosives from driving directly onto our bases and pulling up beside a barracks full of sleeping sailors or out onto one of the piers right next to an aircraft carrier!
Base commanders should wake up before another tragedy like the Marine barracks in Beirut occurs.
