Let me get this right. Hampton Roads is a minimum-wage region (``Mostly bad news,'' editorial, July 25). No kidding!
Since my retirement from the Navy earlier this year, I have been seeking a follow-on career. The first words out of every ``headhunter'' are, ``Are you willing to relocate?''
Every day I scan the classifieds and the Virginia Employment Commissions' Internet site and am astounded at the wage offerings. I cannot imagine working in 1996 for five bucks an hour ($200/wk). I was making that at age 13 (1971), and it wasn't enough then.
You hit the nail on the head with the statement ``Low-wage government jobs are the high-wage jobs in Hampton Roads.'' Unfortunately, the government can't employ everyone in town.
One important item you missed is the military turnover in Hampton Roads. With the abundant military-dependent work force, it's easy for employers to offer and get someone cheap.
The wake-up call has been given, and I hope it's not too late. If Hampton Roads does not heed, it will only add to the dust storm as the high-wage seekers depart!
