A 62-year-old Portsmouth man died Thursday when the car he was driving was hit broadside at the Gilmerton Bridge on South Military Highway, police said.
The four-car wreck occurred during a heavy rainfall about 4 p.m. when Marvin Lee Thompson of the 600 block of Ferry Drive lost control of his 1987 Chevrolet just after passing a truck. A police spokeswoman said the car was hit broadside on the driver's side.
Thompson's car then collided with a third car which, in turn, hit a fourth car. People in those vehicles were injured, but none of them critically.
Police said all those involved were wearing seat belts.
No charges were filed against any of the motorists, and none is expected, police said.
