Early results of a survey by the Coastal Conservation Association of North Carolina show overwhelming support among recreational anglers for a salt water license for sports fishermen and strong support among anglers for a gear license for commercial fishermen.
In the survey, 74 percent of sports fishermen say they would support a $10 license - if revenues were dedicated to improving fishing, enforcement and access to fishing, and to more artificial reefs.
The survey results show that while 30 percent of those responding don't know enough about gear licenses to have formed an opinion, a majority of those with an opinion support gear licenses for commercial fishermen.
The survey of 10,323 North Carolina sports fishermen who subscribe to various saltwater fishing magazines is still underway.
