RAINY WEATHER PUTS A DAMPER ON OUTER BANKS FISHING

Rainy weather kept pier fishing at a minimum along the Dare coast Thursday.

On Kitty Hawk Pier, some nice-size Spanish mackerel were landed during the morning before rain chased most anglers off the pier. Few people fished during the afternoon.

Avalon Pier reported good Spanish mackerel and bluefish action late Wednesday afternoon. Fishing was slow Thursday.

Small flounder, croaker and spot were taken during the morning from Nags Head Pier, but little action was reported over the afternoon.

Anglers on Jennette's Pier managed to land a few sea mullet off and on during the day.

On Outer Banks Pier, fishing was slow during the morning with a few spot and croaker taken. A good run of spot developed late in the afternoon.

On Hatteras Island, Rodanthe Pier reported croaker and some nice sea mullet taken. The water in the area was dirty.

Fishermen on Avon Pier caught plenty of spot, small croaker, some sea mullet and very small trout.

Frisco Pier reported slow fishing throughout the morning. Action improved during the afternoon with spot, croaker, a few bluefish and some nice gray trout landed.

Surf fishing along the northern beaches was pretty good. Anglers caught good numbers of spot from deeper sloughs. Some nice pompano were also taken by fishermen using sand fleas for bait.

Small bottom fish, a few gray trout, little blues and a few flounder were beached by surfcasters around Oregon Inlet.

Small bottom fish were landed in the surf from Rodanthe to Buxton during the morning. Rain put a damper on action during the afternoon.

At Cape Point, some croaker, sea mullet and pompano were taken. Anglers on the north side of the point caught gray trout.

Spanish mackerel and bluefish were landed in the surf around Hatteras Inlet. Pompano were taken in fair numbers along the beach from Frisco to False Point.

Headboat fishing was slow around Oregon Inlet. Tuna fishing was fairly good there. Dolphin were scarce and only a few billfish were released.

Hatteras charter boats reported a few dolphin and wahoo taken. Several billfish were released, including white marlin by Harper's Folly and Hatteras Fever, and blue marlin by Albatross II and Hatteras Fever.

Small bottom fish should remain plentiful in the surf over the weekend. Water temperatures were 78 degrees at both the Army Corps of Engineers Pier at Duck and at Frisco Pier. by CNB
