James B. Acker Jr., 70, of the 800 block of Romney Lane, died Aug. 1, 1996, in a Virginia Beach hospital.
Mr. Acker, a native of Fayetteville, N.C., retired as a master chief from the U.S. Navy after 34 years. He worked as commandant of cadets at Frederick Military Academy in Portsmouth. He was a member of Masonic Lodge in North Chicago, Fleet Reserve Association Branch (NU)99, American Military Association, and The Retired Enlisted Association. He was a U.S. naval veteran of World War II, the Korean conflict and Vietnam.
Survivors include his wife, Charlotte P. Acker; three sons, James B. Acker III and his wife, Lois of Virginia Beach, George C. Acker and his wife, Lynn of Virginia Beach, Mark A. Acker and his wife, Esther of Fort Bragg, N.C.; three sisters, Mary Foxworth Seale, Eleanor Deaton and Julia Mulvey, all of Fayetteville; a brother, Bill Acker of Gulfport, Miss.; five grandchildren, James B. Acker IV of Virginia Beach, Christopher J. Acker and Brandon T. Acker, both of Fort Bragg, Kimberly M. Acker of Virginia Beach, Greg Lee of Virginia Beach. He was preceded in death by a grandson, George C. Acker Jr.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday by the Rev. Henry Boschen in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel. Burial with military honors will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends in the funeral home Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to Davis Corner Rescue Squad.
