George W. Chambliss, a native of Franklin, died Jan. 15, 1996, in New York.
Mr. Chambliss attended Kelly Temple COGIC, in New York City. He was faithful and a deeply committed Christian. He was an educator at LaGuardia Community College and Middle College High School in Long Island City, N.Y. He was an administrator and on the advisory counsel at Middle College High School.
He was coordinator of Career Education and designed a career education system where he was able to successfully place more than 6,000 students in more than 750 sites during his 14 years. Mr. Chambliss also helped to establish 20 middle college high schools throughout the country. He was dedicated to his students and was called to Washington, D.C., to present the Middle College concept and function before the Clinton Administration. He was a member of the National Alliance of Black School Educators. Mr. Chambliss was an educator for more than 20 years. He traveled extensively and was fluent in at least three languages. He was the son of Mr. Willie Chambliss and the late Ida Chambliss.
Besides his father, he is survived by two sisters, five brothers, four aunts, an uncle, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A private graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. today in Southview Cemetery by Elder L.F. Eaton, D.D. Wm. M. Johnson and Sons Funeral Home Inc. is handling arrangements.
