BUSINESS BRIEFS

CUSTOMER SERVICE CENTER: Panasonic/Technics/Quasar, a division of Matsushita Consumer Electronics Co., has built a $50,000-square-foot customer service center in Chesapeake's Battlefield Corporate Center. Matsushita Consumer Electronics manufactures National, Quasar, Technics and Panasonic products. The center will offer customer support to customer calls concerning these products.

Panasonic selected a 10-acre parcel on Independence Parkway in Battlefield Corporate Center. Panasonic broke ground on the two-story facility in March and plans to open its office on Monday. The company will initially employ 150 people, but expects to have 300 employees by next year.

PROMOTION: Chesapeake-based Hickman-Ambrose Inc. has appointed R. Glenn Capps, a Virginia Beach resident, as a principal with the firm. Hickman-Ambrose is a consulting engineering firm specializing in mechanical and electrical systems.

Capps was previously senior director for school plant facilities with Norfolk Public Schools. As a principal, Capps will be involved in quality control, construction administration and marketing.

AFTER-HOURS EVENT: Colonial Downs at Chesapeake will be host to a Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours event on Wednesday, Aug. 14. It will be held at Colonial Downs at Chesapeake Off Track Wagering Facility on 3376 S. Military Highway.

Business After Hours, a networking event for area business people, will begin at 5:30 p.m. and end at 7:30 p.m. The cost of the event is $5 for chamber members, $10 for non-members. Reservations are not required.

SHOPPING CENTER: The first of several anchor tenants have opened for business at Greenbrier MarketCenter, the new shopping center in Chesapeake, developed by Cousins MarketCenters, Inc.

PetsMart, a 26,040-square-foot pet supply store was the first to open on May 30, followed by Bed, Bath & Beyond, a 40,484-square-foot home furnishings store on June 10. Office Max, an office supply and furniture store, Baby Superstore and Target have also opened.

Other anchors scheduled to open at Greenbrier MarketCenter include Harris Teeter, SteinMart, Kinetix Performance, Barnes & Noble and Old Navy Clothing Center.

The center is 91 percent leased.

SUBSIDIARY SOLD: Goodman Segar Hogan Hoffler sold its Chesapeake-based subsidiary, Virginia Building Services, to a group of investors headed by Dick Hamlet, the president of Virginia Building Services. The company was founded while Hamlet was working with Goodman Segar Hogan Hoffler in 1992. Virginia Building Services is a licensed and insured class-A contractor providing full-service mechanical, plumbing, irrigation and construction services. by CNB
