LETTERS TO THE EDITOR - PORTSMOUTH

Congrats on great job

What a great job the Cavalier Manor Little League did hosting the District 6 softball tournament.

The fields were in good condition, the announcers did a great job at the games, everyone was friendly, and the food was delicious. They cooked everything from fresh fish and corn to chicken wings. I don't know what I'll miss more, the games or the food.

There are so many negative things being said about Little League and Portsmouth - I say don't knock it until you try it.

Thanks to everyone who made the all-star games a reality. It's not as easy as it looks.

July 23, 1996 Thanks for baseball

As a lifetime resident of Portsmouth, I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank the Churchland Baseball Association for providing Churchland baseball to the youth of our city. I would also like to thank manager Ted Miller and coaches Mel Kunkle and Bill Bandura of the 1996 Churchland Pony All-Star team for their outstanding professionalism and hundreds of hours of dedication to the young men who played on this team. Our city has no greater asset than our children.

I have been involved with my three sons and youth baseball for years and rarely have I seen coaching and mentoring of this high caliber. My oldest son truly counted it a privilege to be a part of this team, and the positive role models that these young men provided for my son and the rest of the team are far more valuable than anything money could buy.

Positive role models seem to be a rare thing these days. What our kids learn from those they look up to and respect ultimately becomes part of who they are and who they will become. These men obviously knew that, as was evident in their actions both on and off the playing field.

I have read in the past few months numerous complaints regarding the various costs of youth-related sports in our city. I paid $45 for my oldest son to play Pony League Baseball this year. Wow - what a deal!

Thanks again to CBA.

July 23, 1996 Treat children properly

Kids are special because God put them on this earth.

They like to live, too.

Kids have the right to live like other people. Why don't they treat children like people?

My last word: what about the children dying by a gun?

July 25, 1996 Kids dying by guns

There are so many kids dying in the world.

When I think about kids dying, it makes me cry all the time.

Also, it makes me sad.

Why do we have to die by a gun? I don't understand and why we have to pay for the crime by a gun.

My last word: we should care about kids.
