Helen Vogel Drames, originally from New York, died Aug. 3, 1996.
Helen was the wife of Savas Drames, a naturalized citizen, who immigrated from the Island of Cyprus in 1920. He died Aug. 12, 1987.
Helen's parents, Steven and Mary Vogel, her sister, Marie, and brother, Steve, immigrated from Hungary. Helen was born in New York City and was raised in Elizabeth, N.J. It was there that Helen and Savas met, teamed up and became very well-known professional dancers, specializing in the Tango and Apache dances. They were wed June 2, 1929. In October of 1943, they moved to Norfolk, which became their home. In 1970, Helen and Savas retired after 37 years in the restaurant business. They owned the Royal Restaurant on Atlantic Ave. and 21st St., Virginia Beach. Helen was a member of Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, Norfolk.
Surviving is a family who will miss her very much, a daughter, Irene D. Boner and her husband, Richard, of Virginia Beach; her son, John S. Drames Sr. and his wife, Earleene, of Suffolk; five grandchildren, Deborah B. Houde and Timothy, Denise B. Shea and Walter, Richard E. Boner Jr., John S. Drames II and Patricia and David L. Drames and Ellen; seven great-grandchildren, Alysia R. Thomas, John S. Drames III, Jason B. Jackson, David L. Drames, Philip K. Shea, Timothy L. Drames and Kathryn I. Shea; a great-great-grandson, Taylor S. Thomas.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral by Father Savas Constantinou, who is also a nephew and godson, Father Charles Goumenis and Father Demetrios N. Kehagias. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. A Trisagion Prayer Service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, where the family will remain until 8:30 p.m.
