COAST GUARD RIVER SEARCH TURNS UP NO ONE

Five boats and a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter searched almost four hours Saturday night for a body reported floating in the James River, but found no one.

At about 5:40 p.m., a woman fishing on the James River Fishing Pier reported seeing a man's body floating face down in the river, said Newport News police spokeswoman Patty Schlosser. The woman described the man as blond and wearing yellow swimming trunks.

The Newport News Marine Patrol and Fire Department, the Coast Guard and the Virginia Marine Resources Commission searched the river from about 6 p.m. until 9:40 p.m., when they called off the search because of darkness, Schlosser said.

The search party did not find the body. Schlosser said no missing persons report had been filed that matches the body's description.

A team of divers was on standby during the search but was not used.

Officials had not decided late Saturday whether to renew the search today.
