ACCOUNTING
Michael T. Umscheid was named a member of Witt, Mares & Company. He joined the firm in 1984 and serves as the manager of the Suffolk office. His areas of expertise include audit, accounting and tax services. He also provides litigation support for fraud and embezzlement investigations.
Daniel W. Hargrave was named manager of Strickland & Jones in Virginia Beach. He will practice in the areas of taxation, auditing and general accounting services. He was formerly associated with Wall, Einhorn & Chernitzer in Norfolk.
ARCHITECTURE
Richard J. Rusinak was named a partner with the architectural and planning firm of Hanbury Evans Newill Vlattas in Norfolk. He also assumed duties as a leader of the federal design studio. He joined the firm in 1986.
Barbara J. Grecco was named marketing coordinator for Hanbury Evans Newill Vlattas. She previously held marketing positions with Krummell & Associates and Langley and McDonald, both in Virginia Beach.
And Lawson Drinkard was named to the board of directors at the architectural firm. He is the former president and chief executive officer of VMDO Architects in Charlottesville, a firm he helped organize in 1976.
BANKING
Melba B. Freeman was named vice president of Virginia Beach Federal Savings Bank's mortgage lending department on the Peninsula. She works in the Oyster Point branch and was most recently vice president and regional manager at Cenit Bank, where she specialized in mortgage and real estate lending.
Also, Ted Yoder was promoted to first vice president at Beach Fed Mortgage Corp., a subsidiary of Virginia Beach Federal Savings Bank. He will oversee all production for Beach Fed in its Virginia Beach and Chesapeake offices. Prior to this, he was vice president and branch manager of Beach Fed's Virginia Beach office at Pavilion Center.
And, Jack H. Lane Jr. was named senior loan officer at Beach Fed Mortgage Corp. Prior to this, he was a mortgage banker with Mid-Atlantic Financial Group Inc.
ENGINEERING
Wilson R. Ballance Jr. was named senior head technician with Speight, Marshall & Francis in Virginia Beach. He previously worked at Stroud, Pence & Associates in Virginia Beach.
COMPUTERS
James R. Dunham was named staff support coordinator at Metro Information Services in Virginia Beach. He will be responsible for project management and quality assurance at various client sites. He has over 16 years of experience in the information technology services industry.
LAW
Joynes and Bieber in Southampton Roads and on the Peninsula elected Harris F. Trestman, Donald W. Marcari and John B. Gaidies directors and shareholders of the firm. Louis N. Joynes II was elected president of the corporation.
MEDIA
Lisa B. Bohnaker was promoted to director of business development for the Daily Press in Newport News. She joined the publishing company as business development manager in 1992. In her new position, she will focus on the newspaper's entry into broadcast and direct-marketing.
RETAIL
Susan Mayo was named director of corporate consumer affairs at Harris Teeter. She will be based in Matthews, N.C., and will be responsible for managing the company's corporate contribution budget, administering the company-wide customer suggestions program, developing new programs focused on customer service and addressing consumer affairs issues for the company's operations in Virginia, Tennessee, North and South Carolina and Georgia. She was previously regional manager of customer development for the Virginia Beach area.
SHIPBUILDING
David J. Anderson was named senior vice president and chief financial officer at Newport News Shipbuilding. His responsibilities will include finance, accounting, payroll, cost management and cost engineering. He was previously executive vice president and chief financial officer of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. in Winston-Salem, N.C.
INVESTMENT
George A. Theodosius, a financial consultant at Wheat First Butcher Singer in Norfolk, was named investment officer. Prior to joining the firm, he worked with Dean Witter in Virginia Beach.
