Residents and law enforcement officers in Nags Head will a hold a block party of sorts tonight in a campaign designed to keep criminals out of the community.
From 8 to 9:30 p.m., residents are urged to turn on their outside lights and spend an evening outside with neighbors and police.
``Everybody in our department, from the chief on down, will be out in the neighborhoods on foot, on bicycles and in patrol cars,'' Nags Head Police Chief Charles Cameron said Monday.
Nags Head is one of 8,000 communities around the country that will participate in the 13th annual National Night Out sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, the Nags Head Police Department and the Nags Head Community Watch Association.
``National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and illegal drug awareness, generate support for local anti-crime efforts, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community relationships and send a message that this community is actively involved in preventing crime,'' Cameron said.
``We have a wonderful quality of life, and a safe and secure community. This will help us preserve that quality of life and strengthen the relationship we have with our year-round residents as well as our visitors.''
