ITALIAN SHIP VISITS NORFOLK: The Italian amphibious training vessel San Guisto, staffed by 150 Italian Naval Academy midshipmen and a crew of 250, will visit Norfolk this week on its way to training exercises in New York and Boston. The ship arrives at the Nauticus International Pier at 8:30 a.m. Thursday. It will be open for free public tours from 2 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. For more information call 664-1000.
OUTSTANDING VOLUNTEERS: Vice Adm. Douglas Katz, commander, Naval Surface Force, Atlantic Fleet, will present the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal to 60 crewmembers of the nuclear cruiser Bainbridge at 9 a.m. Thursday at Lafayette-Winona Middle School. The Bainbridge's community service, estimated to equal some $1 million, has resulted in numerous awards, but this is the first time individual crew members will be recognized for their devotion to the Hampton Roads community.
NAVAL BASE OPEN 8K RUN: Norfolk Naval Station and the Tidewater Striders will host an 8K run Saturday that will include a 1 1/2-mile view of the Atlantic Fleet's ships and a leg along the base's stately Jamestown Exhibition, or ``Admirals Row,'' homes, before concluding alongside Willoughby Bay. Entry fees are $13 for military and $15 for civilians. Military and corporate teams of three to five runners should add a $10 processing fee. There will be a men's and women's division, as well as wheelchair and race/walk divisions. For more information call 444-2276.
KIDS' POSTER CONTEST: The Armed Forces YMCA is sponsoring a poster-drawing contest for children in grades K-6 who are military family members. The theme is ``My Military Family,'' and the prize is a $500 U.S. Savings Bond. Deadline for entries is Sept. 30. Military Family Week this year will be celebrated Nov. 24 to Dec. 1. NAUTICUS LECTURE SERIES: John Broadwater, manager of the shipwrecked ironclad Monitor, will share his experiences on two dives to the sunken wreck in a slide and video presentation at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 16 in the Nauticus Theater. Admission is free and open to the public. Juliet Pouliot, administrator of the Life Saving Museum in Virginia Beach, and her husband Richard, a former Navy SEAL, will present a lecture based on their 1986 book, ``Shipwrecks Along the Coast,'' at 6 p.m. Aug. 21 in the Nauticus Theater. The lecture series is part of the ``Deep Sea Treasures'' traveling exhibit at Nauticus that runs until Aug. 25. For details call 664-1000.
KINGS DOMINION HOSTS FAMILIES: More than 50 military families in Hampton Roads were recent guests of Paramount's Kings Dominion. Sponsored by the USO of Hampton Roads and the Hampton Roads Joint Services Exceptional Family Member Program Committee, the event allowed the families free admission to the park and a picnic lunch. More than 230 people, mostly children with serious illnesses, shared in the day; area doctors and nurses volunteered to help with special needs. Staffs from Portsmouth Naval Medical Center and Langley Air Force Base's 1st Fighter Wing Hospital chose the patients. The USO plans to make this an annual event.
CHANGE OF COMMAND
Capt. Mark Young relieves Rear Adm. Paul Soderberg as commanding officer of the Fleet and Industrial Supply Center. Young's previous assignment was as head of the Spares Program and Policy Branch on the staff of the chief of naval operations in Washington. Soderberg reports to the staff of the Atlantic Fleet, pending a further assignment.
Capt. Ronald Keys relieves Capt. Daniel Franken as commanding officer of the Norfolk Naval Air Station in a ceremony at 10 a.m. Thursday in hangar LP-2. Keys reports from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. Franken's next assignment is as a Chief of Naval Operations Fellow at the Naval War College in Newport, R.I.
Cmdr. Thomas Metcalf relieves Lt. Cmdr. Ralph Gambone as commanding officer of the School of Music at Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base in a ceremony at 10 a.m. Friday in front of the school (Bldg. 3602). Metcalf's last assignment was as leader of the Naval Academy Band in Annapolis, Md., and Gambone's next assignment is as leader of the Naval Academy Band. by CNB
