There were no reported injuries from the accidental release of styrene vapor from a reactor at Huntsman Chemical Corp. Tuesday morning.
Firefighters were called to the plant, located at 5100 Bainbridge Blvd., shortly after 5 a.m., according to fire department spokes-woman Patricia D. Chappell.
Firefighters stayed on the scene until about 6 a.m., when the release was contained. Chemical company officials monitored neighboring communities throughout the morning and reported no detectable levels of styrene present, though there was some odor.
Styrene is the primary raw material in the manufacture of polystyrene plastic, used in making TV cabinets, videotapes, toys and in medical applications.
