The fast attack submarine Mendel Rivers is scheduled to return to Pier 21 of Norfolk Naval Station at 3 p.m. today from a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea.
Traveling more than 23,000 miles, the Norfolk-based sub and its crew spent 112 days at sea, mostly submerged. It is commanded by Cmdr. Bradford N. McDonald, a native of Norfolk and 1977 graduate of the Naval Academy.
