THUMBS UP! HONORS AND AWARDS

Andrew Thomas Dozier, son of Thomas and Rickee Dozier of Virginia Beach and a student at Brandon Middle School, has been named a national award winner in science by the United States Achievement Academy.

The following Virginia Beach residents who were honored by the Conference of Minority Public Administrators as outstanding African American Leaders in Hampton Roads are: M. Boyd Jones, Helen Shropshire, Ulysses V. Spiva and City Council memberLouisa M. Strayhorn.

Melissa Stuckey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Omego Stuckey of Sterling Court, has graduated from Wyoming Seminary in Kingston, Pa. Stuckey, who also placed first in the VFW of Kingston Voice of Democracy essay contest, received the award for excellence from A Better Chance Inc., was a national merit semifinalist, a national achievement finalist, received the president's award for educational excellence and was named to Who's Who Among American High School Students. During the commencement ceremonies she received the Eugene Goldstein Community Service award and the Irving Robin Memorial prize.

Parker C. Agelasto, son of Peter and Betsy Agelasto of Virginia Beach and a 1994 graduate of Norfolk Academy, has been named to the dean's list for the second semester at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, where he is a sophomore majoring in American cultural studies.

Audrey E. Dodson, daughter of David and Linda Dodson of Overholt Drive, has been named to the dean's list for the spring term at Furman University in Greenville, S.C.

Larissa D. Daniels of Virginia Beach, graduated cum laude with a bachelor of music degree in music education from Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn.

Wendy M. Smith, 17, daughter of Elmer and Kathy Smith of Virginia Beach, has been named to Who's Who Among American High School Students for the second consecutive year. Smith, who is a rising senior at Salem High School, has also been selected as the Advanced Pathfinder of the Year by the Potomac Conference Pathfinders affiliated with the Potomac Conference of Seventh-Day Adventists.

Barbara Gahan Gelnett, former long-time manager of the Fire Escape, has received a national Career Advancement scholarship for $1,000 through the Virginia Beach chapter of the Business and Professional Women's Foundation. Gelnett, who is a teacher assistant at Trantwood Elementary School, was named teacher assistant of the year for the city by the Virginia Beach Education Association. Gelnet has a bachelor of arts degree in history from Juniata College and a master of arts degree in cinema studies from New York University, and is currently pursuing her teacher certification at Virginia Wesleyan College.

Anne G. Kramer of Virginia Beach, has completed testing for certified professional resume writer issued by the Professional Association of Resume Writers in St. Petersburg, Fla. Kramer's professional memberships include Phi Theta Kappa, the resume writers association and the Independent Networking Klub.

Wanda A. Wilson, daughter of Jack and Sandra Archebelle of Virginia Beach, has graduated with a bachelor of science degree in food service management from Johnson and Wales University in Charleston, S.C. Wilson, who is a graduate of Cox High School, also received an associates degree in culinary art from Johnson and Wales University in Norfolk.

Several Virginia Beach students received scholarships from Randolph-Macon College in Ashland. They are Patricia Feltz, David Hummel, Kenya Jones and Brandon Ramsey. R-MC students named to the dean's list for the spring semester were Shelley Lynn Dunn, Brian Alexander Jones, Tiffany Anne Livingston, Kelly Alice McDonald, Jason Ronald McLean, Cori Renee Orem, Catherine Stuart Patterson, Christopher Rudy Tan, Patrick Brandon White and Jennifer Lyn Whitney.

Receiving degrees during commencement exercises were Elizabeth Anne Becker, Amanda Jill Burford, White and Whitney.

Also, Hardaway S. Abernathy, retired assistant superintendent for finance for Virginia Beach schools was presented the school's Algernon Sydney Sullivan. Abernathy, who is a 1939 graduate of R-MC, has served on the college's Society of Alumni Board since 1991.

Kathy J. Harvey, owner of Beltone Hearing Aid Center at Pembroke Two, was awarded a pacesetter award by Beltone Electronics Corporation during the international convention in June.

Former Virginia Beach School Board members Elsie Barnes and Ulysses Spiva and current member Tim Jackson have been honored with the 1996 Community Service awards by the Virginia Beach Alumnae Chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Also, Kirsten Watson of Virginia Beach, has been awarded a scholarship by the Scholarships and Standards Committee.

Three Virginia Beach students received degrees from Mary Baldwin College in Staunton. Carrie Ann Lamy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael John Lamy, majored in biology and was named to Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities and was also a member of Omicron Delta Kappa. Lauren Louise Logan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert John Logan, graduated cum laude and majored in business administration with a minor in economics. Logan, who was named 1996 most valuable athlete of the year and scholar athlete of the year, was also named to Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities and was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa and Omicron Delta Epsilon honor societies. Jennifer Stuart Perkins, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William L. Perkins III, majored in sociology.

Five Kellam High School graduates have been awarded scholarships by the Colonial Agricultural Education Foundation established by Colonial Farm Credit. Matthew Arthur Dudley, son of Richard A. and Elizabeth H. Dudley, will attend the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg. Amy Christine Flanagan, daughter of R. David and Susan B. Flanagan and a 1994 graduate, attends Longwood College in Farmville. Michael Jason Godwin, son of William E. Godwin Jr. and Sylvia A. Godwin, will attend Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. Sarah Elizabeth Grimstead, daughter of William A. and Paula A. Grimstead and a 1993 graduate, attends Ferrum College in Ferrum and Donald Shane Horsley, son of Donald H. and Diane F. Horsley and a 1995 graduate, attends Virginia Tech.

Sarah Laine Rogers, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roney S. Rogers of Virginia Beach, has been named to the dean's list for the spring semester at the University of Richmond.

Richard Dial Hatton, 43 and the son of Loyce Susco of Indian Circle, has been awarded a bachelor of arts degree in studio art and has been named to the dean's list for the spring semester at the University of North Carolina in Wilmington.

Stephen E. Zurek, son of David and Kathy Zurek of Blair Circle and a 1992 graduate of First Colonial High School, has graduated and been named to the dean's list at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. Zurek will be attending graduate school at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge this fall.

Three Virginia Beach residents were honored for service to Girl Scouting during the 16th annual meeting of the Girl Scout Council of Colonial Coast. They are Donna Kelley, Mary Meekins and Dee Whichard.

James D. Rollins, son of James and Marta Rollins of Kempsville and a 1995 graduate of Tallwood High School, has been named to the dean's list at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. Rollins also received a certificate of achievement for highest grade point average as a sophomore within the African American students in the Pamplin College of Business.

Robin K. Dwyer, a graduate of Cox High School, has been awarded a National Merit $2,000 scholarship by National Merit Scholarship Corporation in Evanston, Ill.

Amy E. Laderberg, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B.D. Laderberg of Virginia Beach, received a bachelor of arts degree in political science and graduated cum laude from Williams College in Williamstown, Mass.

Two Virginia Beach residents have had original poetry published by the National Library of Poetry. Linda Thornton, of Rosemont Forest and a Chesapeake school teacher, had her poem ``A Bold Change'' published in The Voice Within. Stanley Wantula of Conrad Lane had his poem ``Ponder Upon This. poetry compiled by the library.

New officers of the Registered Apartment Mangers Association are:

Norman Hassell - president; Teresa Bryant - vice president; Melissa Walton - secretary; and Leigh Parker - treasurer. Members-at-large are Deanne Huguenel and Michelle Gilliam.

Ellen R. Kirby, daughter of Ray and Ann Kirby of Virginia Beach, has completed officer basic school at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. She is assigned to Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, where she serves as a surgical nurse. Kirby, who is a 1990 graduate of First Colonial High School, is also a 1995 graduate of James Madison University in Harrisonburg.

Jessica A. Cadman, daughter of Pamela and Steven Tibbetts and William Cadman of Virginia Beach, has been named a candidate for the title of Miss Teen of Virginia at the 1996 State pageant to be held in Richmond.

Deborah Lankford of Green Run High School has been appointed as a regional judge for the 1996 National Council of Teachers of English achievement awards in writing.

Angel R. Grimes of Dominion Court has had poetry published in Echoes From The Silence - Vol. XIII, which is published by Quill Books of Harlingen, Texas. Grimes graduated from Commonwealth Community College with an associates degree in medical administrative assisting and is employed by Tidewater Medical Group as a medical assistant.

New officers of the Tidewater Optometric Society are: David Lotz - president, William Waldron - vice president, Michael Weil - secretary and Pamela Lundberg - treasurer. Directors are: Norman Kahn, Thomas Cheezum, Wallace Handeland, Mark Seipel and Theresa Batec.

Also, doctors Howard Kahn and Norman Kahn received the American Optometric Association's 1996 continuing optometric recognition award. They have a father and son practice on Laskin Road.

Dorothy Gilchrist of Virginia Beach, has been honored with the Pat Thomas Bain award, which is presented to an individual whose efforts have a significant increase in annual fund participation for Hollins College in Roanoke.

Nicole M. Kruth, daughter of Bernard and Sylvia Kruth of Virginia Beach and a 1995 graduate of First Colonial High School, has been named to the dean's list for fall and spring semesters at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg.
