Irene E. Southerland

CHESAPEAKE - Irene E. Southerland, 89, of the 500 block of Saber Drive, died Aug. 6, 1996.

Mrs. Southerland was born in Camden County, N.C., and was the daughter of the late Joseph G. and Margaret Bartlett Etheridge. She was the widow of William Hyden Southerland. Mrs. Southerland, a graduate of East Carolina University, taught in the public schools in Camden County and taught private piano lessons, as well as conducting glee clubs and choral groups. Mrs. Southerland was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, South Mills and served as organist and director of music for more than 50 years. She was the lifetime chairman of the Worship Committee, former president of United Methodist Women and served on numerous positions on church boards. Mrs. Southerland was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society.

Survivors include her son, William H. (Bill) Southerland Jr. and his wife, Omara, of Charlotte, N.C.; her two daughters, Anne S. Old and her husband, Forrest, of Chesapeake and Joyce S. Flowers and her husband, Jimmy, of Cofield, N.C.; 10 grandchildren, Joy Austin, Dr. Paul Old, Mike Old, Billy Southerland, Steve Southerland, Tim Southerland, Cindy Askew, Frank Jones, Mark Jones and Scott Flowers; 15 great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Agnes Etheridge of Englehard, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Trinity United Methodist. Interment will be in South Mills Cemetery. There will be a viewing and visitation from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, immediately preceding the funeral. The family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, South Mills, N.C. Oman Funeral Homes Inc. is handling arrangements.
