Donald D. Bennett, who rescued Richfood Holdings Inc. from the brink of financial disaster and turned it into the country's fourth-largest grocery wholesale distributor, will step down as its chief executive officer this year. Bennett will remain as the Richmond-based company's chairman through the end of 1998. After that, he will become a consultant until he turns 65 in 2001. John E. Stokely, Richfood's president and chief operating officer since June 1995, will become president and chief executive officer in December. Analysts say the move reinforces to Wall Street that Richfood has a strategic view for the future. (Knight-Ridder/Tribune Business News) by CNB
