Regarding David N. Narr's letter (Aug. 1) suggesting that money donated to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals would be better spent funding Eastern Virginia Medical School's diabetes research:
I doubt that Mr. Narr would take the American Heart Association to task for failing to fund local soup kitchens, or Habitat for Humanity for not sponsoring breast-cancer research. So why pick on PETA?
There are thousands of organizations working to benefit people, and many PETA members, like myself, support more than a few of them. Helping animals doesn't mean you can't also help people, and helping people doesn't mean you can't also help animals.
