BRIEFLY: OUT AND ABOUT IN THE VIRGINIA BEACH SPORTS

Out and about in the Virginia Beach sports scene:

The National Bud Light Pro-Am Beach Volleyball Series returns to Virginia Beach this weekend with more than 600 players converging at 2nd Street attempting to qualify for the national finals.

Men and women open divisions will play Saturday and their competition will be broadcast at a later date on the Prime Network.

Amateur divisions for coed and four-person teams will be held on Sunday.

The top five teams from each of 12 divisions qualify for the Bud Light National Championships Oct. 12-13 in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Stay on the beach.

Once the sand has cleared from the Bud Light volleyball event, more volleyballers will take to the sand as part of the 34th annual East Coast Surfing Championships sports festival Aug. 23-25.

Brought to you proudly by the Virginia Beach Jaycess and featuring as a main event the Bud Surf Tour professional surfing competition.

A new event this season will be an Hawaiian outrigger canoe race featuring 15 teams from up and down the East Coast. Then there will be the usual array of beach/water-related sporting activities of amateur surfing and skimboarding.

There will also be a golf tournament on Monday at Honey Bee. Call Gary Kennedy at 498-5467 about that.

Simply super.
