Stars of Suffolk's basketball past, present and future will provide instruction Monday through Wednesday during the inaugural Unity in the Community Foundation Basketball Clinics at Lakeland High.
The roster of clinicians, a Who's Who of basketball, includes former Norfolk State coach Charles Christian, former Norfolk State forward Derrick Bryant, Colorado rising junior Howard Frier, Delaware State's Keith Stagg, former Division III player of the year Tony Smith, former Texas-El Paso star Phil Crocker, Nansemond River's Montoria Valentine and Antoine Willie and Lakeland's Damon Tillery.
``Some of the guys who've been away at college just got together and came up with this as a way of giving something back to the community,'' said Suffolk Parks and Recreation Department athletic supervisor Tony Colden. ``This gives them a chance to showcase their talents and give the young kids some positive role models to go by.''
Special guests include Virginia guard Harold Deane and former Boston Celtic Junior Burrough.
The program, co-sponsored by Suffolk Parks and Recreation and the SPOR-AC Summer Youth Program, runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day. For more information, call 925-6326. ILLUSTRATION: File photo by L. TODD SPENCER
