Flounder and white marlin, a couple of fish near opposite ends of the glamour scale, provided much of the fishing excitement in recent days.
Sonny Spiers of Cheriton on the Eastern Shore took the flounder lead in the annual Virginia Salt Water Fishing Tournament with a 9-pound, 8-ounce fish caught in the Chesapeake Bay off Cape Charles. The same trip produced a 6-2 flatfish for Mary Rideout of Cheriton. They were aboard the boat Old Hickory.
White marlin action has been hot for several days in an area southeast of the Cigar seamount. Individual craft have released as many as 11 whites a day in the spot, which is southeast of Rudee Inlet and northeast of Oregon Inlet and accessible to boats from both ports.
Elsewhere, the weekend produced the first reported tarpon of the year in Virginia, a fish released out of Oyster by John Fisk Jr. of Virginia Beach on the Jerry Lynn.
It also produced the season's first Virginia Salt Water Fishing Tournament citation award for a Spanish mackerel, a 6-0 fish caught offshore by Donald H. Hamilton of Portsmouth; and the season's heaviest reported Virginia dolphin, a 38-8 catch by Nick Sotelo of Virginia Beach on the Comp Time.
