JAMES W. PHILLIPS

Dr. James Woodson Phillips, USN retired, 72, died Saturday.

Dr. Phillips was born July 9, 1924, in Roanoke, son of the late Robert Dandridge and Nelle Gardner Phillips. He was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Roanoke. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war he entered Emory & Henry College, upon graduation he entered the School of Dentistry of the Medical College of Virginia. After graduation, in 1953, he entered the U.S. Navy as an officer and remained in it until his retirement in 1971. He moved to Front Royal and joined Dr. James E. Williams in private practice until 1982. He was a member of the American Orchid Society having served as a judge and past president 1986-1988.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Anderson ``Andy'' Phillips and a sister, Helen Phillips Lyne of Rochester, N.Y.

Services and interment will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to the Clarke School for the Deaf, 47 Round Hill Road, Northampton, Mass. 01060 or American Orchid Society, 6000 South Olive Ave., West Palm Beach, Fla. 33405. Arrangements are being handled by the Maddox Funeral Home.
