COP SHOOTS MAN DURING BURGLARY CALL

A police officer shot a man Monday evening during an investigation of a residential burglary.

Police officers responded to a report of a burglary in progress at a home in the 5600 block of Summit Arch, off Baker Road, about 7:30 p.m. When police arrived, they said, they saw five men, armed, leaving the home.

According to early reports by police, gunfire was exchanged between police and the five men, leaving one man wounded.

However, police later reported that some of the suspects, when confronted by police at the Summit Arch residence, fled in a car. As the men drove away, either a police officer or a citizen - police were not clear on this - pointed out the suspects to another officer who was responding to the burglary report.

That officer followed the car and stopped the men in the parking lot of an auto sales business at Baker and Newtown roads, police said. At least one of the men inside the car got out and was shot by the officer, police said. No information on why the officer fired was available Monday night.

The wounded man - whose identity was not available - was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition, police said.
