ALBEMARLE HOSPITAL GETS A NEW PRESIDENT

Phillip D. Bagby will begin work Sept. 9 as chief executive officer and president of Albemarle Hospital with a three-year contract that pays $125,000 annually.

He replaces Douglas Fairfax, who resigned last March.

``I'm looking forward to his arrival,'' said Don Witosky, interim CEO and the hospital's chief financial officer.

Bagby, 50, is vice president of Missouri Baptist Medical Facility, a 499-bed hospital in St. Louis. Albemarle Hospital is a 182-bed facility. Bagby is also president of a smaller community hospital outside of St. Louis.

As part of his Albemarle Hospital duties, Bagby will direct Regional Medical Services Inc., a nonprofit organization formed to improve the level of health care in northeastern North Carolina, said Sandra Phelps, public relations and marketing director for Albemarle Hospital. RMS helps recruit physicians to the region. The Regional Medical Center, an outpatient facility in Dare County, falls under the auspices of RMS.

The hospital's Board of Trustees selected Bagby after extensive interviews and a three-day visit here by him and two other candidates. He was offered the job a month ago. After working out details, Bagby signed the contract last week.

``It was a fairly unanimous decision on the board level,'' said Witosky.

Hospital CEOs make more than most heads of community non-profit organizations, said Ellen MacMillan, vice president of public relations for the North Carolina Hospital Association.

``We consider the market for hospital CEOs to be a national market,'' said MacMillan. ``There is some fluctuation in salary according to the region of the country, but not as much as there might be in other fields. There is a lot of competition for a good hospital CEO.''

The average national salary for hospital CEOs is $178,000 a year, according to survey by Modern Healthcare. In the southeast region of the United States, the average salary for a CEO of a hospital the size of Albemarle Hospital is $128,900 annually.
