Pasquotank Republicans are making a major effort to regain the seat on the county board they all but forfeited when J. Timothy Thornton decided not to seek re-election in 1994 at the end of his first term.
Dr. Jerry Goldschmidt, an Elizabeth City ophthalmologist, has picked up the torch for the Republicans and will run as an at-large candidate against Zee B. Lamb, the Democratic chairman of the County Board of Commissioners.
Goldschmidt announced Tuesday he was appointing U.E. ``Smitty'' Smithson, an Albemarle construction company owner, as his campaign manager.
Smithson said Goldschmidt will ``bring a fresh perspective and focus to the issues that challenge the board.''
``Pasquotank County is in essence a large and growing business that needs the most credible leaders we can provide,'' said Smithson.
Thornton, the former GOP commissioner and a wealthy Albemarle developer, is believed to be the only Republican to serve on the Pasquotank County board since the turn of the century.
Lamb, an Elizabeth City attorney, has served on the county board since 1988.
