``Plans sell themselves'' (editorial, July 30) contained positive comments about the evolving architectural design of the MacArthur Center. This was, indeed, welcome reading.
The editorial states, ``The city of Norfolk is well-aware the present plans for the Center and their evolution over time is a story that hasn't been fully communicated to the public. . . . It now seems ready to do so.''
Serving as chairman of the City of Norfolk Design Review Committee, I am well-aware that the city has already been doing just this in developing the still-evolving plans. A broad range of interested parties in and out of city government are involved. The public was further represented by a Virginian-Pilot reporter at three extensive meetings where these same plans, which your editorial commends, were displayed, but much was lost in the transmission.
As soon as more-refined and definitive plans are developed (within the next six weeks), the major effort to display them, which you heard discussed, will be undertaken. Your newspaper can play an important role in helping communicate the project design itself, as well as the fullest understanding of the project's complex program, design process and response to contextual urban-design considerations.
