Mabel Starke Downs, 91, widow of Ulysses G. Downs and former Norfolk resident, died Monday, Aug. 12, 1996, in Long Eddy, N.Y., while on vacation.
Mrs. Downs was born in Drewryville, Va., attended Madison College and taught school before moving to Norfolk. She most recently worked at the Naval Supply Center, Norfolk Naval Base and retired in 1970. She moved to Philadelphia five years ago and lived with her son and his family.
She is survived by her son, Donald; her sister, Ruby Barrett; and her grandchildren, Pamela, Peter and Timothy.
A graveside service will be held in Forest Lawn Cemetery at 1 p.m. on Saturday Aug. 17, 1996. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, is in charge. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, 162 Prince George St., Annapolis, Md. 21401 in lieu of flowers.
