Lawrence D. Lewis, 72, of the 5900 block of Oetjen Blvd., died Wednesday, Aug. 14, 1996, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
He was a native of Shallotte, N.C., and had retired from the Naval Air Station, Oceana, as an automotive mechanic after 36 years. Mr. Lewis was a member of First Baptist Church of Norfolk where he had served as a deacon and a member of its ``Young at Hearts'' senior group. He was formerly a member of Corinthian Masonic Lodge (NU)266, AF&AM for 28 years, Norfolk Scottish Rite Bodies for 26 years and the Khedive Temple of the Shrine and its Mini-Model ``T'' unit for 15 years. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post (NU)4809, and had served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Foy B. Lewis; two daughters, Bobbie L. Wiley of Chicago, Ill., and Joanne L. Culpeper of Virginia Beach; a sister, Myrtie Varnum of Supply, N.C.; a brother, Willie Howard Lewis of Quinby, Va.; two grandchildren, Elyce M. Culpeper and Bryce N. Culpeper.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in First Baptist Church of Norfolk by the Rev. Richard E. Baker. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday in Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, Virginia Beach. Memorial donations may be made to the Leukemia Society of America.
