A man suspected of having stolen a car was apparently trying to elude police when he darted across the road and was struck by a police car Wednesday night.
The man, whose name was being withheld until relatives could be notified, died at a hospital.
Police were investigating the incident in the 7100 block of Sewells Point Road late Wednesday.
The incident began about 6:40 p.m. when an officer spotted a car that had been reported stolen earlier in the day. The car pulled into the parking area of a convenience store near Sewells Point and Johnstons roads. The driver went in the store and then came out and fled.
Dispatchers ordered more police units into the area while the officer chased the man around nearby apartment buildings.
``He darted across Sewells Point Road right in front of another police unit,'' said Larry Hill, a police spokesman. The officer ``tried to stop, but was unable to do so in time.'' The police car had its lights and siren on.
The identity of the police officer driving the car was not released.
