Joseph H. Humphreys Sr., retired vice president of Standard Products Inc. and Humphreys Railway Inc., died Aug. 15, 1996.
He is survived by his children, Genevieve D. Humphreys and Joseph H. Humphreys Jr.; his brother, Benjamin R. Humphreys Sr.; his uncle, H.R. ``Peck'' Humphreys Jr.; his nephew, Benjamin R. Humphreys Jr.; and cousins, Anita Humphreys Cook, Lloyd B. Hubbard Jr. and B.H.B. Hubbard III, and also Sheila Humphreys Broone of Jackson, Miss., and Martha Humphreys Goldsmith of North Winham, Maine. Mr. Humphreys was the son of Genevieve Hubbard Humphreys and H. Foster Humphreys. Mr. Humphreys is also survived by Frances ``Fran'' Davis, a friend and companion.
A graduate of Hargrave Military Academy and of Smithdeal Massey Business College, Mr. Humphreys began working in the family business when he was 16 years old, joining the company in a full-time capacity upon graduation, and remaining with the company until its sale in 1988.
Mr. Humphreys great-grandfather, H.R. Humphreys Sr. founded Standard Products, Inc., a menhaden fish company with its main office in Kilmarnock, Va. During his employment with Standard Products, the company fished 28 boats with eight plants, one in Mississippi, three in North Carolina and four in Virginia and traded internationally. During his employment with Standard Products, Inc. and Humphreys Railway, Inc. Mr. Humphreys served as vice president, manager of operations and a director of both companies on national and state levels. Mr. Humphreys was a member of Grace Episcopal Church and later of White Stone Methodist Church.
Remains rest at the Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock, where the family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be at the White Stone Methodist Church Saturday at 2 p.m. with interment in the church cemetery following the service.
